Skeletal System

Location
The Skeletal System is located all over the body. Humans have bones in every body part from head to toe.
Role
More than 260 bones support the body and provide protection for organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. The bones of a skeleton are like a frame that muscles are attached to. Muscles allow the body to move because they are attached to bones by bands of tough elastic tissue called tendons. The tendons allow the muscle to pull the bone. An important task of the bones is to produce blood cells. Bones also provide a store of chemicals such as calcium salts which are released into the blood stream as they are needed. The Skeletal System even acts as a shock absorber.
Make Up
There are two main divisions of the human skeleton. It is the Axial skeleton and the Appendicular skeleton
Axial Skeleton-This is the first part of the skeleton and contains the Skull, Ear, Vertebrae, Sacrum, Coccyx and the ribs.
Appendicular Skeleton- This is the second part of the skeleton and contains the arms, legs, Pectoral, Gridle, Scapula, and Clavicle.
Places where bones meet are called joints and there are different kinds of joints.
Immovable Joint- This joint does not move, however it’s tightly fitted together and is found in the Skull
Hinge Joint-Shows a back and forth motion and is found in the elbow and knee.
Ball-and-Socket- This joint has the widest range of motion at about 360 degrees and is found in the shoulder.
Gliding-Only has limited flexibility and found in the wrist, and spine.

There are two types of bones that make up your skeletal system

Compact- These bones are hard and strong.
Spongy- These bones are strong but they are light weight and full of empty pockets. These bones also contain more blood vessels then the compact bone

Other Tissues Found in Bones

Marrow- Contains blood vessels which make up the red marrow and fat cells make up the yellow marrow. Also marrow has blood forming tissues.
Epiphyseal Cartilage- This Cartilage makes the bones grow larger in length.
Periosteum- This is a double membrane which contains nerves, blood vessels and bone forming cells.
Cartilage is a type of connective tissue in the body. It is made of cells called chondrocytes embedded in a matrix strengthened with fibers of collagen and sometimes elastin depending on the type of cartilage. There are three different types: hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, and fibro cartilage. Cartilage serves to provide structure and support to the body's other tissues without being as hard or rigid as bone. It can also provide a cushioning effect in joints.
Function





Skull-frame work to contain eyes, ears mouth and nose-protects the brain
Rib cage-protect vital organs
Legs and Arms-allow person to move widely and freely-use hands and arms to do tasks
Spine- provides structure from which all other upper body structures branch- protects the spinal nerve which is the highway that all the information your brain sends to your body travels
Staying Healthy
· Eat foods that are rich in calcium
· Eat plenty of greens like broccoli and spinich because they are rich in calcium and they also contain other substances that help your body absorb that calcium.


  • Spend some time under the sun and your body will create vitamin D
  • Avoid excess protein and sodium. They can lead to an increase in the amount of calcium excreted from the body through urine and feces.


What Can Go Wrong



  • Arthritis- Arthritis is the inflammation of a joint, and people who have it experience swelling, warmth, pain, and often have trouble moving.
  • Fracture- A fracture occurs when a bone breaks; it may crack, snap, or shatter
  • Osteoporosis- In osteoporosis bone tissue becomes brittle, thin, and spongy. Bones break easily, and the spine sometimes begins to crumble and collapse

What Would Happen If Something Went Wrong

Pain
Loss of mobility
Loss of limb use
Easy risk of breaks and fractures

Could a Person Survive Without This Body System

A person could not live with out a skeleton because it would leave vital organs and nerves exposed putting serious injury at risk. Bones make new cells and without new cells a person could not grow. Also with out a skeleton we wouldn’t be able to move or do anything. People would be a pile of skin and organs.
